Grounds & Sanitation Services maintains 626 acres of landscaped area throughout the University, Hospital and Medical Center, of which 200 acres are University
lawns. In addition to mowing, weeding, and landscaping activities, thousands of man-hours are spent annually on litter control. Sanitation employees collected
and disposed of 11,013 tons of solid waste in FY 1998/999. The Recycling staff, augmented by students, collected and sorted 1,100 tons of recyclables in FY
1998/99. Grounds and Sanitation Services also provides Moving and Storage services and Recycling services.
The mission of the Grounds and Sanitation Services unit in support of the University's mission, will strive to create, maintain, and foster grounds conditions that are safe,
clean, healthy, ecologically sound and aesthetically pleasing. We will conscientiously employ means to further the collection, disposal, and adaptive
use of all recyclable materials. Our tasks will be accomplished with a workforce that is knowledgeable, dedicated and committed to delivering quality customer
service.
Functional Areas:
Grounds Unit: maintains 626 acres of landscaped area throughout the University, Hospital and Medical Center of which 200 acres are University lawns. Sanitation Unit: Collects and hauls to local landfills all non-hazardous solid waste refuse, which includes peration and minor maintenance of a fleet of eight University sanitation vehicles.
Recycling Unit: Collects, sorts and markets for reuse glass, assorted paper, newspaper, cardboard, and aluminum can recyclables from containers strategically located in or near virtually every building on campus. The Recycling unit uses a full-time staff augmented by students.
Moving and Storage Unit: Provides the University and Medical Center with space to store materials and files
